Feature design for a medical appointment booking application


Reworking concept


The challenge
Doctolib is a french medical appointments booking app created in December 2013. It is very successful and it is a reference in the French medical world. Through this project, our job was to retain Doctolib's users, by re-designing features and bringing in new ones.

We approximately had a few hours a week over a period of 2 months to work on this project.
How to help Doctolib's users quickly find an available doctor ?

Methodology
We both have been working on the first three phases of the project. Then, we explored different ideas :

Interviews
After doing research, we had 5 interviews with Doctolib's users. We also did a survey.

Prototyping
Then I chose a trail to follow and I built wireframe. I tested this mockup with 3 person to improve my concept.

Personas
We synthesized our survey into a report to create personas. The goal was to focus on important issues.

I achieved my final mockup app.

Then we brainstormed to find the best idea to develop.

Thanks to our survey and interviews, we managed to make a link between users's personalities and behaviors ...
... and we select the most interesting, the one who has the biggest issues and was the most likely to gain loyalty with a little works on the application.

Prototyping
I decided to focus on the referring doctors problematic. Young people finishing Hight school sometimes has to leave alone in a new town for studies, and the most of the time, they don't know any doctor in. Doctors are often refusing new patients and and this information is given too late on Doctolib. We can see in the journey map that this moment is very frustrating and a real waste of time. I also focused on the medical follow-up aspect.




I am offering 3 new features to Doctolib :
Formalization
1.
My referring doctor
For my future researches, I can only see praticians that are accepting new patients, additionally to my referring doctor. This will avoid situations where I can see in the results of my research doctors that are not accepting new patients.
Home interface : simple and reassuring. this step doesn't take a lot of time ( only three rounds ).

My medical team
Now I have access to a new tab :my medical team. I can find my referring doctor in it, and I can also have a specialized doctor : gynecologist, dentist, dermatologist...
This allows me to have acces to sterling doctors and their availablities.
We can skip this step if we want to ( there is a message to explain why this step is important).

3.
Notifications
A few times during the year, the app sends me some notifications. It recommends me to have regular check-ups according to my past appointments. It can also alert on important medical information as outbreak of gastro for exemple.
To have a specialized doctor, we have to know him. The goal of this feature is make the organization of medical appointments easier. For exemple, when we have to wear braces, we have to make a regular appoitment with the same dentist.
Notifications are rare and about important things. the goal is to sensitize people on their health, and to guide them to the good habits to take.
