Installation kit for meal distribution for the homeless in 2020.
The situation
The challenge of this project is, in this time of pandemic, to rethink the spaces of distribution of free meals on the street. It was necessary to adapt to the health rules, but also to take into account the need for interaction that these people have, even more isolated during the pandemic. Our first intuition was that, despite all the problems caused by Covid-19, it left many covered spaces open: places that could benefit some time people who need it the most?
The period that humanity is experiencing in 2020 is difficult for many of us, but especially for the most disadvantaged.Covid-19 is an even bigger threat to homeless. Quarantine, and other precautions, while essential, make the distribution of hot meals to beneficiaries very complicated.

How as a designer, could we treat unused spaces, to accommodate social functions ?
Our project
Alinéa is a service that offers modular furniture kits that can be purchased by theatre managers who want to help the homeless in this time of pandemic. With the help of volunteers and thanks to this furniture designed to respect social distancing, anyone can organize free meal distributions, respectful of sanitary measures.

Notre méthode

1
Understanding
We have done a lot of research to understand the street world and associations.

4
Track exploration
We then explored three tracks before choosing a final that brought together the best.

2
Synthetization
We gathered all our information and created many infographics.

5
We made our visuals and prepared our presentation material.

3
We discussed as a group on ways to follow in order to respond to our chosen problem.
Ideation

6
Oral presentation
We presented our project (10 min) in front of our speaker, a professional from the community and other students.
Challenges
One of the biggest concerns was the isolation of the homeless, already present before the crisis, but even more difficult to bear for them since. Lack of information and hygiene make them more vulnerable to the virus than others. Thanks to our research, we know that Paris has enough empty concert halls to accommodate the beneficiaries for a meal. It is important to maintain a social bond, allowing them to be nourished and comforted, and informing them about the barriers and symptoms. Here is a summary of our information :

Scale model of our flows in the Gaveau room, by Julie Balian
Alinea is composed of a distribution table, several seats, silicone signalling elements and a gel dispenser panel.
A flow of people
The crossed paths allow the beneficiaries to stay at a good distance without queuing in a "classic" way. The goal is to provoke intersections between them to create a sense of social interest. The beneficiary, upon arrival, receives a blue or orange tray and goes in the corresponding queue. Each round on the ground symbolizes 1.50m of distance, one must remain on a round when waiting.

The elements can be assembled and disassembled easily without tools. They can be re-used for other things when there is no distribution.
The individual tables are placed according to the safety distances and allow discussion. The trays are detachable and contact only one person before being disinfected.
